Booking-In Appointment

Today was the day of my booking-in appointment, which is the sort of "official" start to the pregnancy. This is when I was assigned to a midwife group and given a scan to date the pregnancy. The appointment was at Falkirk Royal Infirmary, where the day care centre for Forth Valley is located. We were going to go by train, but it was very windy so in the end we just drove. The scan was done first and I was a nervous wreck, but we could see you as soon as the scanner was put on my tummy. You were lying on my uterine artery, which meant that you were being bumped up and down in time wiht my heartbeat! We could see your little heart beating and you waving your arms and legs around. At one point, you had your hand up near your face and you moved your mouth as your hand brushed against it. The scan confirmed the pregnancy as 10 weeks + 1, which was a bit earlier than we thought. The sonographer said that we would need to come back as this was too early for her to do some of the measurements.

After the scan, we sat down with two midwives and answered loads of questions. One was a student, but the supposedly experienced one did not instil much confidence in either of us. Hopefully we won't meet her again.
