Kittiwakes

A trip down to Gateshead today, but on approaching the Tyne Bridge the smell of guano and the wild cries were very reminiscent of the Isle of May trip yesterday. There were even some kittiwakes on the May, although I didn't manage a photo of them.

Mighty strange it was after that to see these wild seabirds trying to make themselves comfortable on Newcastle's Guildhall. If you look large you may be able to see the forest of vertical wires that are affixed to the upper window ledges, presumably with the idea of deterring pigeons. They seem to favour this over the, er, Gateshead side of the bridge. ;-)

[On the way home I could see the Isle of May quite well from the train near Dunbar - about 15 miles distant. Yesterday we couldn't see the island until we were within about a mile of it!]
