Black magic!

Seven months ago this looked like this.

Six months ago it looked like this.

We have experimented with this.

We have had catch crops like this.

The main crops in this bed have been these and tatties. Both have been pretty good harvests.

But the thing I'm most delighted about is the way in which a pile of manure, some turf, grass clippings and compost magically transforms into beautiful black loam. It's gorgeous, dark, crumbly and wriggling with the magicians themselves.

It's all cleared now, I wish I was more organised and had a nice Winter crop ready to pop in. But instead I'll rake it over and tuck it up under another layer of manure and compost. Protected against the nasty weather to come, safe and warm... waiting for Spring.
