Domed Cieling

This is the inside of the dome that stands above the vestibule of the Painted Hall at the old Royal Naval College at Greenwich in London. The hall itself is a magnificent space, designed by the architect Christopher Wren and painted by James Thornhill. It became a dining room for sailors and their families. It is a spectacular place with the walls and cielings richly decorated. In January 1806 the body of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, commander of the victorious British fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar, was laid in state in the hall. During the few days he was here, 30,000 people came to see the body.
