Fringe Day 5

After the late night last night we had a great big sleep and a fried breakfast before taking a quick tour around some open viewing properties that C might want to buy. She's very fickle. One minute she loved one, the next minute another. If she doesn't make her mind up (and fill in her financial forms) she might have to remain living in Beirut (sorry, hospital accommodation) forever.

We hadn't seen a musical, and we had a 2 for 1 deal so we went to see Reel-to-Real: The movies musical. It was a lovely show, made up of songs from the old movie musicals all made into an almost comprehensible storyline. The performers were pretty good (better than much of the touring stuff we usually get up here) and the singing and dancing was entirely acceptable. What made this was the way they did the set. It was a great big blank set which they projected clips from the movies onto, and the actors interacted with this. The real highlight was Singing in the rain where they projected Gene Kelly onto a moving board so that it appeared that he was dancing across the stage whilst the hero of the story did the same alongside him. Worth seeing just for that. (4*)

Thirdly we saw Robert White's Outrageously Peculiar Organ as we'd seen him in Late n live last night (pictured). He was in a tiny little room in Teviot where we used to have our committee room back in the day. He was awesome, I love him and he is my favourite 'discovery' of the Fringe so far. Robert describes himself as the only gay, Aspergers, quarter Welsh, webbed-toed dyslexic pianist debuting this Fringe. To be fair he wouldn't be for everyone, some of his stuff was quite vulgar / graphic but he was immensely funny and entertaining throughout as well as being clever and likeable and a bit different. If you like your stuff edgy and dark, you should look out for this guy. (5*)

We finished up the evening with Pete Jonas: Dark side of the poon. Well we didn't pay for the tickets thankfully. Actually his delivery was ok and he was mildly amusing, but his set finished with a giant talking model of some female genitalia which punched him in the face and squirted some sort of liquid into the audience. Its not that we don't like the crude stuff on occasion, however we didn't really know what to make of that. (2*)
