Bishops Cannings

I went back to the Kennet and Avon today because looking at the map afterwards yesterday I discovered I had been quite near a swing bridge that I hadn't known about. I approached it from the other direction, from Bishops Cannings.

There were some moored canal narrow boats and barges, a swan and a family of cygnets, and, luckily, an approaching narrow boat from the left, so I had an opportunity to see the swing bridge in action. The two girls had jumped down from their narrow boat to move the bridge, and were being kindly helped by the lady who had come up on the path I had used, though the girls were in no difficulty, as she was about to cross the canal.

The footpath to Horton and the old Horton Mill was said to be haunted by a large black pig and in the C19th was used safely by day but avoided by night.

Here the Kennet and Avon is lock-free for the fifteen miles east of Devizes up to Wootton Rivers, and this stretch is known as the Long Pound.

So unlike yesterday, my picture actually shows some of the canal itself. It also, remarkably, shows people.

Today's Elvis DVD giveaway is Paradise, Hawaiian Style from 1966: "All Elvis break loose in the swinging, swaying, luauing south seas!". This was his third consecutive film to be set in Hawaii and had a paper-thin plot and no aesthetic worth but must have pleased the Hawaiian tourist board no end.
