Great Blue Heron is the most common and the largest Heron in North America. They are waders found along coastline, marshes, lakes and ponds.
They are expert hunters and swallow their prey whole. They also eat mice, insects and other small creatures. They have been known to choke to death on their prey because of their S shape neck. Average life span is fifteen years.
They stand from three up to four and half feet tall. Their wingspan is five and half to six and half feet wide. Weight ranges from four to seven and half pounds. Females produce two to seven eggs and nest in tall trees and sometimes in low shrubs. Both parents sit on the eggs. Babies are usually ready to be on their own at about two months of age. They usually nest in
colonies.
