David's Blips

Gastown

It was one of those days where I had a difficult choice picking a photo for Blip. Too many to choose from.
We headed up to the Vancouver Lookout at the top of the Harbor Tower. From there you get a great 360 degree view of the city.  Only then did I get an impression of how big Vancouver is.  Having seen New York, Chicago, LA and San Francisco in the last 9 weeks, Vancouver didn't seem massively overwhelming in size, but it is a huge city.

The great thing about the Vancouver Lookout is that your ticket is valid for the whole day.  So you can go up during the daytime and then again at sunset. Which we did.  You can see the photos I took on my Flickr page.

Between the two tower visits we headed to Gastown, and that's where todays photo comes from. Gastown is named after "Gassy" Jack Deighton, a Geordie seaman, steamboat captain and barkeep who arrived in 1867 to open the area's first saloon.

This is a picture of a steam powered clock. Not too sure why you'd power a clock by steam, but it was impressive none the less.  Every hour people gather round to hear it play the Big Ben chimes through a steam outlet.
