The Baku they don't want you to see!

These are the 'James Bond' oilfields (or part of them) that featured in The World is not Enough. For some reason the Azeri authorities are not proud of their oil history and police chase away anyone that shows too much interest by taking photos (they don't like you to take photos of anything they think might taint Azerbaijan's image, so industry is a no no). This was taken from the car while driving through. The high winds and near sand storm also helped - we didn't see many people outside. We were taking a friend to the petroglyphs and mud volcanoes south of Baku and for the first time drove a different route that took us through the oil fields. It's an interesting place and has its own stark, industrial beauty.
