St Apolline - the dentists' saint

A legend! In a castle of Bourgagne, the Seigneur lived with his wife called Ioanna. They had four daughters. At each birth the mother lost two teeth so she looked less beautiful each time. She became pregnant again and feared the loss of two more teeth.

She vowed to observe the Feast of St Apolline! In her sleep, St Appoline appeared to her and promised to restore her teeth. This time a boy child was born to Ionna, and she lost no teeth.

The cult of St Apolline started in the 13th century as the patron saint of dentists her own martyrdom was a bit grizzly in the dental line. However, this particular chapel in Guernsey is the only chapel in the British Isles dedicated to the lady. And thus the only chapel special to dentists. It was founded by a charter from King Richard II on 20 July 1394.

And here is St Apolline's Chapel

I dedicate then, this blip to J my dentist. I know that his wife Y is a regular reader of this blip but just in case if any mutual friends pick this up first, please do let her know back in Edinburgh.
