Ruettes Tranquilles

It has to be said that road signage in Guernsey is less than helpful - in fact, it is less than existent! My theory is that the road signs were all removed to confuse the Germans in advance of the invasion, and then afterwards they forgot to put them back.

The centre of the island is the part that most tourists don't bother about. And yet this is the hidden charm of Guernsey - ruettes tranquilles lead through tiny little hamlets, past fields of grazing Guernsey cows, cottages with wisteria round the doors, and small roadside chapels. Pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders have the priority - and on the "greenways" cars can't travel anyway. There are many, many miles of these charmingly peaceful pathways, and so few walk them.

This is a typical greenway in the northern part of the island.

And here is a sign which shows that locals here are very conscious of the challenging problems of finding your way.

And finally, meet the egret!. Don't see these in Scotland!
