Favourite night of the year

I adore Halloween. Some of my earliest memories are of going out Guisin'. As a kid in Ayrshire we had to do a turn and were rewarded with goodies. The preparation was a big part of the fun. Making costumes, rehearsing in my memory that was all we did for weeks beforehand.

Tonight we were invited down to Dieseldaisy's legendary Halloween parties/. Hordes of children, great fun with traditional, and it has to be noted - very pagan, Halloween pursuits such as dookin for apples and attempting to eat sticky jam doughnuts suspended from the ceiling. Once upon a time this would have been scones doused in treacle but the doughnut are easier to hang on strings so we have gone all modern on that one.

DD, being very sensible really, fed us all with some fab lentil soup and some serious stodge food to keep us warm when we eventually ventured out into the dark, dark night.

For their turn tonight Ruairidh had taught the other kids his favourite rhyme, taught to him as a wee bairn by my Granny...

Not last night, but the night before
Three wee witches, came to the door
One wae a fiddle
One wae a drum
And one wae a pancake stuck tae it's bum!!!

It was a right dirty night. Not that cold but a constant smir that travelled in all directions and creeped into every gap. Diane and I had gone off with the group of small boys, as we wanted to make the most of our costumes. When we did eventually make it back Diane removed her costume as she was soaked and discovered a very spooky halloween face had appeared on her t.shirt. Scared the bejeezers out of us, I'll tell you!

Eventually we all headed home at the witching hour of 8pm. I attempted to frighten the kids by reading them ghostly tales when the went off to bed. But they were so tried out that they dropped off before I got to the scary bit.

Thanks DD, looking forward to next year already. (Even if you did reveal my true identity)
