Spiral Stair, Fairfield Shipyard Offices, Glasgow

I managed two hurried visits to Doors Open Day locations in Glasgow, then to the hairdresser, before heading to P & C's Wedding Celebrations.

Detail of a cast iron stairway leading up from the drawing office in Fairfield Shipyard Offices in Govan. This "A" listed building, designed by John Keppie in 1890, is currently undergoing major renovation. These have been described as the finest shipbuilding offices in Britain. Much of the statuary and grand staircase are covered over whilst the building is made watertight, and the wet and dry rot dealt with. It was very busy here, last year they had 1,100 in two days.

On from there to the Malborough Dance Hall, now known as The Shed, in Shawlands. A local theatre group were demonstrating dancing from the 50s and 60s and acting out classic Glasgow poems and stories. Not so busy when I called by, which made it easier to appreciate the surroundings.

The wedding was a very happy occasion, with an 80s touch. Whilst the couple signed the register, the band played "Red Lights" by Curosity Killed the Cat, and walked down the aisle to "Down to Earth". Our friend IT read his own adapted version of Ephesians 5, complete with bunnet and a wry smile.
