Gillipaw's Journal

Arlington Baths Club, Glasgow

To celebrate its 140th anniversary, the Club opened for the first time on Doors Open Day. I was visitor 1414 over the two days. They expected to hit 1800. I know a few members, so was interested to have a sneaky wee peek inside. It is Britain's oldest private swimming club.

I have never seen a pool with a trapeze and hanging hoops before. I liked the way these hung from the roof beams. There is also a beautifully tiled Turkish Suite with star shaped coloured windows in the ceiling, steam rooms, saunas, a gym and a cool room for post-exercise relaxation. All rather fine ... pricey to join. More info. here.

We then walked on to the Civic Cermony Suite in Park Circus. What a beautiful interior, every room lavishly decorated with very detailed cornicing, woodwork, glass and tiling. Hints of art nouveau, Mackintosh and the Spook School. Well worth a visit.
