Today's the day ...................... for a Sunday afternoon walk

The day started a bit wet and windy but by mid-afternoon it had faired up and we went for a walk on the Helm - a limestone ridge to the east of Kendal.

It's not very high at all but if it's a clear day you get wonderful views in all directions from the Lake District mountains right across to Morecambe Bay. On a good day you can see Blackpool Tower.

Today you could certainly see across the drumlins to the railway viaduct over the bay at Arnside. The skies were full of towering clouds, sometimes very dark but sometimes gloriously illuminated when the sun's rays managed to peek through.

Drumlins, by the way, are elongated whale-shaped hills formed by glacial ice acting on underlying unconsolidated till or ground moraine. Its long axis is parallel with the movement of the ice, with the blunter end facing into the glacial movement .......... or so it says in Wikipedia!

We just enjoyed the walk and the everchanging views from the Helm ..........
