Glencaple Quay

Born and bred in Dumfries, I had to make a stop on the way back through - if nothing else to see my uncle. So it was lunch (first of all we thought at The Swan at Kingholm Quay - closed for repair) eventually at The Nith at Glencaple.

Glencaple was the port of Dumfries - and a very busy port it was, exporting farm produce and bringing in lots of comestibles. There were also passenger services to Glasgow and Liverpool. You could bring ships drawing seven feet of water up to this port. Although it was hard work keeping it dredged from the ever present mud.

The railway killed it stone dead! All that is left is this rusting hulk, and the memories.
