Bright lights, big city

It's a nice feeling when you arrive back in Bristol and miraculously find a parking space outside one of the old townhouses, just a short stroll from where we now live.

Once upon a time, the occupants would have popped out and boarded a tram to get round the city. Now they join a racetrack lit by neon signs.

In a little experiment, the image merges the two worlds - the lights captured as we whizzed back tonight; the tram courtesy of cleansteve, who lent me some material on old Bristol when I saw him today.

Meeting Steve was the highlight of a pleasant Sunday. We enjoyed an afternoon drink down at the Crown and Sceptre in Stroud.

The pub has been such a good find. When we went in today the place was very busy, with families sitting round a huge table eating their Sunday dinner in one part of the pub, a crowd of people watching the football in another part, and others like us chatting in a third part.

The conversation was twice punctuated by large cheers which, with Stroud some distance away from Merseyside, might have indicated goals for Liverpool - who for years have had a strong following away from Anfield.

But above the bar of the Crown and Sceptre are cartoons of Everton heroes of the past - people like Gordon West and John Hurst. And, sure enough, it was the Toffees who were 2-0 up.

Anyway, it was good to see Steve's smart new Canon and chat about blippers here and there. We both agreed it would be good to take some sort of photography course, but I'm not sure what would be (a) most useful and (b) most affordable. Any ideas welcomed!
