Bike Safety Lesson

Two bicyclists are riding on the shoulder of the road and four are riding on the side path. This illustrates a good lesson in bike safety as shown by the two experienced men.

It is safer to ride in the road because you are more visible.

Drivers of motor vehicles are more aware of objects and people that are in the roadway. They tend to ignore anything that is not on the road because things not on the road are not likely to be hazards to their driving. Therefore, the four men on this side path, which is intended for golf carts, are more at risk when they re-enter the road because they have been "invisible". Also senior citizens driving golf carts can be unpredictable.

Likewise, bikes should ride with the traffic on the right side of the road for the same reason.

Vehicles turning right and colliding with bicycles (the "right hook") are the largest category of causes of bicycle deaths in the United States.
