Kaffee und Kuchen

A little bit of this and a little bit of that was the order of the day, though strictly no dusting or cleaning.
Monday is wash day and has been ever since I was in nappies.

In those days it involved filling a copper boiler in the kitchen with water and heating it up to almost boiling point . Then the washing powder was put in and the clothes in strict order were immersed and worked up and down with the wooden rolling pin.
I'm sure there was some article especially for this, but it was the rolling pin in my mother's house.

After they were deemed washed, the clothes were put through the hand wringer clamped to the side of the sink, so that they could conveniently fall into the rinsing water. Another bout of the wringer and they were either hung out to dry in the backgreen or put up on the pulley inside.
My early memory of a Monday was a steamy house and having to sit at the table at tea time on a chair piled with folded sheets to save on the ironing. But maybe the latter was done on a Tuesday.

After the boiler came the electrically operated twin tub which involved only marginally less work, until today, when you put the washing into a hands free automatic washing machine, set the timer and sit down with the newspaper until the washing is finished. Only then do you have to become involved in hanging everything up, but only if there is not a tumbler drier available for drying.
No one needed to go to a gym in those days to burn off calories.

Shame that no-one has invented a robot ironing system......... I could of course hire Dottymummy for the job.

The highlight of my day will be my weekly get together this afternoon with my friend of very many talents when we will put the world to rights over coffee and cake.
