Railroad Bridge #3

The oldest railroad bridge in Grand Rapids is the Grand Rapids & Indiana over the Grand River (there were other subsequent names for the bridge, depending on which rail was currently using the bridge). Built in 1892, it is a multi-span metal truss bridge constructed with two tracks. In the 1980s, Conrail changed its route and abandoned the bridge.

The 575' x 24' bridge was converted and now serves pedestrians (although there were a couple of parked vehicles on it today). Here it is seen through some trees. Today it is known only as The Blue Bridge.

Last year it was the setting for many ArtPrize works, in particular the Table & Chairs and Nessie.

There was an Old Man at a Junction,
Whose feelings were wrung with compunction,
When they said, 'The train's gone!'
he exclaimed, 'How forlorn!'
But remained on the rails of the Junction.
