The Big Ol' Moon

Perth 800 was a year long celebration in 2010 marking the 800th anniversary of the granting of the Royal Burgh Charter to Perth by King William the Lion in 1210. The Lightnight (tonight) was a big festival of light in Perth with many of the churches and other buildings lit up. There were bands, street performers, a metal dragon breathing real fire, dancers, laser light show, and the big event, the fireworks being set off on the banks of our mighty River Tay, which runs through the centre of Perth. A crowd of 30,000 was expected and the fireworks, set off from 5 boats on the other side of the river from where the crowds stood, were absolutely fantastic. They went on for around 20 minutes and the last 5 or 10 minutes saw snow falling too. It was a special evening for Perth.

In our lovely new concert hall in the main auditorium, suspended from the ceiling was this stunning moon, which was created by a leading chinese artist Wang Yu Yang. I'm not sure just how many light are in it, but I wouldn't like to be paying the electricity bill for it! A chair was put underneath the moon and you can just make out the children sitting on it. There is an evening show this weekend from Mr Yang, and am interested to see it.

Tomorrow the celebrations continue with an Andermass Medieval Fair. We'll be there!
