Bile beans

I could have made good use of some bile beans this morning. After our meeting in York yesterday, we had a night out topped off by a very large curry that defeated us despite the presence of several legendary trenchermen.

I arrived in York yesterday in the middle of a white-out. Photographers were out in force snapping away at the Minster and other landmarks. I was in a rush to get to the meeting and was running late, so I didn't take any pictures.

Today there was just time to get a few pictures of the Bile Beans sign before our morning meeting. In any event, this is perhaps a slightly different take on snowy York scenes.

Bile beans were apparently a health product that were particularly popular in the 1930's and 40's, they were in pill form and were meant to have similar properties to Liver Salts. Production finally discontinued in 1986, the same year coincidentally that the York Arts Forum restored the sign with financial support from the manufacturers. Such extravagant claims for the health giving properties of a product perhaps could not be made today.

There was a lot of snow in York, there is less here in Cumbria though it is still very cold. Wifie reports strange birds at the feeders today, I haven't worked out what they might be. Numbers of birds coming to the garden are growing as the cold spell continues.
