Special Brew

This is Brunswick Square in Bristol which, according to one website, 'occupies an important place in the history of Bristol's architecture and town planning'.

It was laid out in 1788, the year the Times was first published, Massachusetts was declared the sixth US state, the poet Byron was born and the painter Gainsborough died.

I'm not sure what the latter would make of the square's 21st century feature - an illustration of a couple squeezed into a shelter sharing a can of Special Brew.

I'm not averse to public art, or urban art - whatever you want to call it - but I'm not sure about the clash of styles with the fine Georgian architecture.

A much better day today at the grindstone. My colleague Will was moved to the bank of six desks where I'm based, along with his individual sense of humour.

On his arrival, another colleague told him: "You're too obscure for this desk."

Come to think of it, he was asking if I had ever played Euchre*.

* Apparently a pub card game played with two decks in Cornwall, Devon, Kent and the Channel Islands...oh, and the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Never heard of it!
