Any Guesses?

My first guess was a potato, but I was wrong. Then I guessed cheese, but that is a scarce commodity here and an incorrect guess.

I'll give you a hint. It's one of the most common things to eat here in Thailand, just in a different form.

Now do you know?

It turns out to be sticky rice. It is pounded into these hard disks and dried. Then we cut it into thick strips and fried it. After frying, we rolled the strips in sugar and devoured them. They were delicious, crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside. This is a treat only found in some northern villages. One of the dorm students brought it back after visiting family for the New Year.

The Thai people have become so inventive with their most common commodity. Rice, while eaten with most meals, is not always eaten in the same form. We have rice noodles in all shapes and sizes, sticky rice, rice gelatin, and numerous forms of rice candy.
