Human Snow Ploughs

Well, its been snowing here in Harbin for a few days and there is a lot of snow on the roads. Traffic here is chaotic at best but snow makes it even worse. Although drivers actually do slow down in the snow.

As soon as there is a break in the snow, literally thousands of people come out to get it off the roads. As you can see from the pic, they just use shovels (and brooms) to gather it into the hand held carts. After that, they either shovel it onto a truck, or pile it on the side of the road to be shovelled onto a truck later.

You can also see that this is a very busy road. There are no signs, no men waving flags or even any witches hats to tell approaching traffic they are on the road. Just the bright orange vests. Not exactly very high on the scale of Workplace Health and Safety levels.. but I suppose because of the way traffic 'works' and because of the way people cross the road (any where, any time), drivers are constantly on the lookout for obstructions so it ends up being fairly safe.
