Short Gill

Another day of training.

This time we are in Short Gill in Barbondale, not far from Kirkby Lonsdale.

We are right on the boundary of the Yorkshire Dales National Park

A gill or ghyll is a stream or beck that tumbles down a mountain or hillside.

They are good fun to explore and can be ascended or descended.

We are over here because we seldom use this location, so it's good to get over here for a refresher.

There was not a lot of water in the gill , despite all the recent rain.
The rock is limestone so the water percolates down through cracks and dissappears. Sometimes it will re-appear lower down. In this case the lower half was completely dry.

Water only flows all the way down immediately after heavy rain.

Here Stu (in red/blue) and Jon head up to the top of a waterfall.

Jon is about to set up some safety ropes for us to use/look at/comment upon.
