A Collector of Oddities

Sunbow

I spotted this lovely sunbow today. It was present on both sides of the sun and was huge. It is created in exactly the same way as a normal rainbow except the light is refracted through ice crystals in the clouds instead of through rain. Notice how the sky on the inside of the bow appears darker, just like with a rainbow.

The brighter spot in the centre is known as a sundog and some of them can look almost as bright as the sun itself.
