Sheffield Old and New

This is the area of Sheffield near the Shalesmoor Roundabout on the A61. Having included the image of a corner of the new yesterday I thought I'd focus on the old and the remnants of the steel industry for today's blip. This photograph was taken within 50 metres of yesterdays blip, on the edge of a derelict car-park that looks out towards the Don Valley.

Many of the old buildings are now empty and are gradually being replaced by modern blocks of flats, though the recent recession seems to have put a stop to this kind of activity. The Cementation Furnace remains as a monument to early steel production in the area. It was an early technique to produce blister steel by heating wrought iron in sealed pots in a coal fired furnace.

We had sun again today, which was a bonus, and I drove home in daylight which was an extra bonus. It was lovely to drive along the top of the valley andsee the green hills of the pennines stretching away into the distance.
