A Collector of Oddities

Polter weather

This photo is what the streets looked like as we tried to get home without being blown to bits after an aborted attempt to go to Glasgow to a talk on poltergeist phenomenon by Dr Barrie Colvin. Specifically the rapping noises often associated with poltergeists. An acoustic analysis has shown there to be a difference in the rapping sound produced by an alleged polt and simply knocking on a bit of wood with your knuckles. The knuckle knocking produces a percussive type sound while the polt noise is a seismic sound, consistant with the building up of tension which is then suddenly released.

Given that the original "spirit rapping" was done in Victorian times by the Fox sisters and the rapping was discovered to be one of the sisters cracking her toe joint very loudly, I would be very interested to know whether such a toe crack produced a similar seismic sound. Not that it would mean all polt sounds were produced by crackly toes of course. But I am curious to know. Maybe next time.
