The Buck Stane

This unassuming stone has an interesting history. Originally placed further North, at the crest of Braid Road, (an old Roman road), it is reputed to mark the place where the King of Scotland released his hounds when hunting buck (or deer). The actual age of the stone is unknown but in his excellent book Historic South Edinburgh Volume 2, Charles J Smith notes that the stone appears in records of 1496. Information of location to be found at Buck Stane
