The finger that closes the roof

Really interesting day of lectures today. We went behind the scenes at Wimbledon and saw the control room where they open and close the roof of Centre Court. This is the finger that presses the button. Even if you are not a tennis fan you will have heard of the magic cover which is unique in the world. They use the latest technology to close the roof in bad weather. Rain causes so many problems at Wimbledon, often causing matches to be cancelled and seeded players having to wait days to finish their games. In 2009 the first year it was in use we did not have a drop of rain but it was used to provide shade for the Royal box. We can't have those people getting sunburn. Last year it was only used once. it's like bringing an umbrella. You bring one, it does not rain!
