Gilsland Historical Walk

Yet another pre-walk today for the Haltwhistle Walking Festival (April 30 - May 8). This one was the Gilsland Historical Walk, due to be held on Thursday May 5th as part of a whole day of walks and events in the village of Gilsland. I'm down to lead the walk and my good friends B and M took me along the route today.

Here they are after our lunch stop. The weather was not very kind today and it drizzled most of the time. We, of course, still had a good time and sorted out any little glitches in the route. It's going to be a lovely walk, just about 8 miles and lots of interesting things to see on the way.

Our walk starts at Gilsland Spa Hotel. During the Second World War pregnant mothers made their way to Gilsland and, safe from the bombing of Newcastle, they gave birth to their babies here. It was the first experience of the countryside for many. Some of the war babies will be returning to celebrate during our Gilsland Day. (M is one of the War Babies.)

Now it is time for a hot bath before cooking the evening meal...........
