On the high moors

Today we completed the 5th section of Bradford's Millennium way from Oldfield to Laycock. It took us over Keighley Moor the highest part of the route so far and I was surprised to find shooting butts up there (seen through the gap in the wall - best large). As we went through the stile onto the moor there was a sign warning of 'Nesting Birds' and we saw several grouse. Also there were stretches of the heather that had been burned which I know they do to produce new shoots for the birds to feed on.

It was a great walk eventually taking us down from the moors to the green valley bottom at Newsholme Dean. We saw some very scruffy sheep - maybe rare breeds - and as well as the lambs there were horses and a foal feeding in the fields. Most of the way it was fine and sunny, though rather breezy on the tops, but minutes after taking this shot we had a sharp shower of hail.

I love these dry stone walls found all over Yorkshire even up on the moors where they seem to have little point at all!
