Seeing as I am

Doing what they do...

On the evening before Father's Day I thought I'd post this blip of Bob and H doing what fathers and sons have done together down the ages...playing with a train set.

The set in question was Bob's. He received it around his eight or ninth birthday and it's lived in our attic for years. The other day he decided to retrieve it so that H could enjoy it. H has been pestering for a 'proper' train set since...ooh...he was first able to utter a complete sentence I think.

Of course the train set didn't work. It was all oxidised and the motor wouldn't run. But that's all part of the fun isn't it? Over the past few days they've lovingly taken apart the engine and cleaned the motor then gently sanded the track using the finest of fine grade sand paper and repaired one of the wheels. It's worked intermittently since then but today they finally got it going properly. Now they just need a transformer and some kind of operating system and they'll have it up and running as a proper set.

It's really lovely to see them working together like this. My dad always did stuff like this with us and I know Bob's dad did with him too. A lot of people think Fathers' Day is a bunch of old hooey, dreamed up in a boardroom at Clinton Cards and maybe it is but you know...I don't care. Bob is a great dad, as is mine and as was Bob's...and sometimes it's nice to pause for a minute in this busy old life and let Dad know that you think he's fab.
