Grass of Parnassus

Another great walking Wednesday. We drove beyond Bewcastle and set off ona 10 mile circular walk with Christianbury Crags the highest point. Underfoot was very boggy/tussocky/holey/irregular and so the walk was challenging in sections. We were inclined to be watching our feet rather than the views or anything else.

This was why we nearly missed the Grass of Parnassus, growing over a limestone section (it likes alkaline soil not the acidic peaty bog habitat). It is not a grass but is a saxifrage, Parnassia palustris. I think it has a beautiful flower. I think it looks almost like a painting rather than a photo.

Feet a bit sore, legs a bit tired - off to bed.
