In 1723 the first ever weaving mill in Ireland was founded in Avoca just a few miles away from my front door. Originally powered by a water wheel the main production unit was converted to electricity about 60 years ago but the old section containing the hand looms is still open and better still, the public are welcome to visit. While I was there at lunch time today a coach load of German tourists were being given the tour.

The old machinery is totally fascinating. All springs, knotted pieces of twine and fluff stuck to the oily bits. I'm not quite sure what purpose this wee thing serves but it makes for great blip material.
