Shadows on Court 17

A new sort of shadow blip for me. It's the U.S. Open tennis tournament, on one of the side courts (the shadows would be less interesting in the stadium), at 5:14 p.m. on a wonderfully sunny late summer day. Edit: It turns out that Court 17 is a new one, and not really a "side court".

As you can see in the score box, Donald Young is about to upset Stanislas Wawrinka by winning the 5th set tie-break. Young is a 22-year old American, unseeded, while Wawrinka was seeded 14th (he's from Switzerland--and he's been #2 there for years after Roger Federer).

I learned today that the U.S. Open is the only tennis major that has a fifth set tiebreak; in the three others, the fifth set continues after 6-6 and has to be won the old-fashioned way, by two games. This made possible the longest match in professional tennis history (at Wimbledon last year); John Isner won that 5th set by 70-68).
