Auchindrain

Auchindrain is one of those places on the road between Carradale and Renfrew that we always mean to stop at but never quite get round to. However, this summer we noticed they had opened a tearoom and today we decided to make it our pit-stop.

Auchindrain is the last and most complete example of a Highland farm township, where a group of families worked the land in common. It is situated 7 miles south of Inverary and is a fascinating insight to life in a township between the 18th and early 20th century. It is very much a living museum with sheep, cows and hens wandering about and some of the land cultivated with the varieties of potatoes grown in Scotland during that period. Kids from Clachan Primary School were on a trip and having a great time. The boys were helping dig ditches while the girls made pancakes on a griddle over on open peat fire, assisted by a lady in period costume. We spoke with the Head Teacher, who we know, and she raved about he place and the fun the kids were having.

I was spoilt for choice of things to blip but settled on the hen and harrow combination, which I thought was quite interesting.

For years Eleanor has complained that we never stop anywhere en route to or from Carradale because I am too focused on getting to our destination. She is right of course. Now she is suggesting I only want to stop so I can Blip. Again she is right, but we now also have the benefit of seeing all those places I promised we would stop at one day. Its definitely a win win situation!
