Everyday is like Sunday

Everyday is silent and grey

This is the coastal town that they forgot to close down
Armageddon, come Armageddon, come Armageddon, come

Morrissey - 'Everyday is like Sunday'

The rain held off this morning and I felt well enough for a bracing walk along the prom at New Brighton. Despite a recent £60 million regeneration scheme (A cinema! A new supermarket! A Travelodge!) I think it's safe to say that the town has seen better days...

These shop-fronts are part of the art deco New Palace 'entertainment complex' which was built in the early 1930s to replace an original 1880s building which was destroyed by fire in 1916.

The original building contained two concert halls, a ballroom, skating rink, aviary and subterranean canal through which visitors could sail past illuminated grottoes! The current building was used to billet US troops during World War 2. Not a great deal has happened since...

This bloke certainly seems keen to "get the hell out of Dodge!"

This is for Jo8lens because of her love of all things Morrissey and for Sootmouth who knows this area well - and got the hell out!
