Windblown

Jenny Brown's Point, Silverdale

A solitary wind pruned Hawthorn grows on the low cliff above Morecambe Bay. Projecting into the bay is a man-made breakwater of limestone boulders. I have described this as a skear before, though that term more accurately applies to glacial deposits of boulders in the mudflats. Scattered around are the blocks of the ruined wharf that the breakwater was built to protect. Across the Bay, the limestone finger of Humphrey Head projects.

I don't often use black and white, here it is an attempt to bring out more of the textures of the scene that were not obvious in colour. It was a choice between this somewhat stark image and a fluffy bird photo of a long-tailed tit. A hard choice as I've been trying to get a half-decent photo of one of these active little birds for a long time.

The nights are drawing in now, and more obviously so on an overcast afternoon like this. There was just time to get out for a quick walk after work, and after the rain, before the light disappeared.
