Soap Box Derby

Last night we scoured the web for something to do today and found out about a charity soap box derby over at Goodwood Motor Circuit in aid of Cancerwise. It looked like a fun day out for a good cause so we headed over there this morning.

There was lots to do there with stalls, food and the usual bouncy castles along with scout group push go kart racing and of course the soap box derby its self where competitors were launched down a big, tall ramp to race it out on a 100m section of the race track and then also see how far they could then get down the track.

Well we had a good fun wander round and watched the test runs for the derby before going to the air field cafe. Baby was not prepared to sit down for lunch and so was wandering from Wife to me around the table. On one such trip he decided to hang of the back of a chair. Before we knew it he was going backwards and I was wastefully reaching over the table shouting "No". Wife got over to pick him up from under the chair as blood started to drip out of his mouth. We felt all the other patrons give us "your terrible parents looks" before they went back to thier fried foods of fuel to take to the airs with to increase their carbon footprints.

After the bloody clean up we ignored everyone else and took turns trying to cheer the boy up before heading back to the derby. There was some very serious competitors in the derby, like the ones who had a proper pit area, and then there were some also silly ones, like the A-team van made from cardboard that they played the theme tune for each time they raced. There was also a lighting McQueen one where the driver lay down face forward in it. Not only did it look a bit silly but was quick too. I am not sure I would have liked to have gone hurtling down that ramp face first.

There were a few incidents, most of which we missed, though none of which quite as bad as Baby and the chair. There was a lot of excitment at the scout group push go kart racing which the little ones enjoyed.

The crowds may not have been massive or even that enthusiastic but it was interesting to watch the face first McQueen make it all the way to the final only to lose in the last few metres to a team of scouts. All in all a good day for a good cause.
