Kinda Before Horrigans

Spin, twizzle...

... happy dance.

This was an image which I took on the spur of the moment - the lighting conditions were atrocious and even with an ISO of 400 (should have been more like 800) a wide aperture of f/2 and shutter speed of 1/125, I was still struggling. What you've got is basically silhouetted and the motion frozen - the latter I wanted, the missing detail was annoying.

So... it got rescued in Photoshop. Firstly, I converted it to black and white (the lighting at the bowling alley was horrible and no amount of messing with the white balance was going to rescue it) using Silver Efex Pro and a high contrast conversion with the brightness and contrast tweaked slightly. Then, used a levels adjustment layer to bring out the high key feel and a black brush to paint out the layer on the bottom half and around her head because it was only the detail on her top I was really bringing back. Then, a white brush to take out a little of the lane divider near her right arm which was distracting... and a bit of sharpening.

And that was that!

Tip of the Day:
White balance can be a tricky beast - shooting in RAW gives you much more flexibility with it because you can adjust it after taking the image... but if you want to know more about it generally, then Introduction to White Balance is as good a place as any to start!
