Giacometti Shadows

We drove to NYC today, and I paid a short visit to the Metropolitan Museum this afternoon.

This is a modest gallery in the modern art wing, with six works by Alberto Giacometti (five characteristic sculptures and a painting). I was struck by the shadows--as I have often been with his works.

The painting (just left of center) is of Giacometti's wife, Annette, as is the sculpture bust just to the right in the middle of the gallery. He portrayed her dozens of times, as he did his brother Diego (who cast his sculptures). He is one of my favorite modern artists; here's a blip of another standing figure in MOMA's sculpture garden, also with shadows!
