Malmesbury

I have rather neglected my River Series as generally I find canals afford easier access and have more going on per mile than the average river. However, this afternoon I returned to Malmesbury for the first time since January, partly to see the River Avon (the Bristol Avon), close to its source at Sherston.

The modernised building on the right of St John's Bridge was converted into apartments in 1984 but was formerly a series of 19th century silk mills. Avon Mill had been the site of a mill since the 13th century and became a fulling mill three hundred years later. However, by the end of the 17th century, the woollen industry in Malmesbury as a whole had closed down. It became a silk mill in 1852, when it was bought by silk manufacturers Thomas Bridget & Co. of Derby, to serve the Victorian fad for silk ribbons. It closed in 1900, but was reopened in the early 1920's by Avon Silk Mills Co. Ltd. Production continued until 1941.
