Baroque Masterpiece

Possibly one of Edinburgh's most prominently-sited buildings, sitting proudly at the top of The Mound, is the head office of the Bank of Scotland. The original building was designed by Reid and Crichton in 1801, but most of the baroque statement we see today is the result of David Bryce's major recasting of 1863. It is one of his best works, making full use of the incredible hilltop site as viewed from Princes Street to the north, and acting as a most definite end to George IV Bridge from the south.

I drive this way most mornings and it never ceases to amuse me to see my reflection in the bank's grand glass doors. The interior is equally impressive.
