Heron dawn at Snells

Woke early and out before sunrise to run along the length of Snells Beach before heading up the hill, and back home. There was enough exposed sand with pools of water to entice large numbers of birds to the foreshore. At least 30 herons in various sized groups along the length of the beach.

I paused regularly along the walkway to take photographs of one or more herons with the water and sunrise beyond. First shots the sky was still mostly grey, and the water was lines of different shades of silver. Passing through this stage to where the sun had emerged above the clouds to send a beam of golden light across the water.

With so many pictures to choose from, I sought advice from S, Jesafly and Tsuken. In the end I made my own choice. I liked this because of how much is going on. A heron flying, two wading, and one landing. Reflections and shadows. Gulls further out. Crepuscular rays and a golden rim to the clouds showing that the sun was about to emerge.

This is the last day of son and family staying with us. Tomorrow they get on a plane back to Sydney, and I go back to the office next week. It has been a great holiday break.
