Yao Ethnic Group

Another GREAT day today. We walked and walked and walked. We took in most of the touristy sites of the rice terraces and had a small adventure. At every lookout, there are local ladies trying to sell stuff. Unbeknown to us, at one such place, the lady called ahead to her daughter to say there were some walkers headed her way. About an hour later there was a lady and her daughter sitting and waiting. They offered us lunch at their home and we accepted. They were local farmers and their home was very very basic. Pretty much two rooms downstairs and more upstairs.. Open kitchen area. Under the building, they raised pigs and chickens and of course had rice fields and a veggie garden.

I thought lunch was really nice.. They gave us deep friend sweet potato and a pork and veggie dish. Terri preferred an egg and some strange grass looking stuff dish and while it tasted nice, it doesn't seem to have done her stomache much good. They told us to give them whatever we thought was fair so we gave them double and a bit more above what we think the same dishes would cost back home.

Along the way the scenery was amazing, with rice terraces stretching down and down and down and then along forever. We met these two ladies who are from the Yao Ethnic Minority. The ladies of this group never cut their hair.. They offered to comb it while we took pictures. It is customary to pay them and the fee is a flat 10 yuan per person so we paid. You don't get to see such things very often so that's our blip for today.

I'll try to get a nice rice terrace picture for tomorrow.
