Crocus Carpet

A carpet of crocuses stretching from Causewayside along Melville Drive to Tollcross.
Purple, yellow, white in dense cheerful clumps opening their petals innocently in the warmth to reveal deep orange stamens.

Planted in a wave pattern in the grass under the trees such a long time ago by children, mine included, from the local schools and seemingly immune to crushing over the years by feet and paws.

Purple are my favourite; the yellow remind me of Easter even though they will have faded by then; the white ones look virginal and pure; while the few striped ones seem confused about their parentage.

So many towns and cities have avenues and parks of daffodils waiting to bloom into a showy display, but these unassuming little crocuses are beating them to it for the moment.
