Linlithgow Palace Gate

The ancient gateway to the Royal Palace of Linlithgow.
Owned now by Historic Scotland as one of the principal residences of the Kings and Queens of Scotland in the 15th and 16th centuries.
It was built by James I, in 1424, after a great fire which destroyed most of the town. Both James V and his daughter Mary Queen of Scots were born in the palace which is said to be haunted by Queen Mary of Guise the wife of James V.
After the Jacobite Rebellion it was destroyed again by the Duke of Cumberland's army in 1746. Now it is a magnificent ruin.
