Postcard .....

....... # 2

The second in my postcards of Ilkley series.

This postcard commemorates the last time Ilkley had a day without rain. The consensus amongst historians is that it was in the year 1537 although there is some debate over the exact date.

As you can see in this artists impression, many a cagoule was thrown aside in gay abandon. You may also notice that the movement of tectonic plates in the intervening years now make it impossible for me to line the postcard up accurately.

Each year on the summer solstice, the residents of Ilkley dance around the twelve apostles on the moor wearing only Wellington boots and plastic shower caps in the hope that they will someday appease the sun god.

Unfortunately anyone who has been out on a Friday night in Ilkley will know that the dancing skills here are unlikely to bring an end to the rains anytime soon.
